HHSO Presents Coastal Traditions with Ranky Tanky

Author: CH2 Press Release

The HHSO presents the 7th concert of the season, Coastal Traditions with John Morris Russell conducting and performances by the Savannah Children’s Choir, the Hilton Head Dance Theatre, and the timeless music of the Gullah culture by the band, Ranky Tanky.

The Savannah Children’s Choir was founded in Savannah, Georgia in 2006 with a mission of uniting Savannah’s children through the power of song. The choir has toured nationally to Atlanta, Charleston, Chattanooga, Chicago, Greeneville and Orlando and internationally to participate in the Somerset Youth Choral Festival in England, Days of Verona International Choral Competition in Verona, Italy, and on a solo tour to Prague and Vienna.

The Hilton Head Dance Theatre proudly presents The Nutcracker each year, a much-loved annual event that has delighted tens of thousands of residents and visitors alike as it is the official kick-off to the holiday season. In addition, Hilton Head Dance Theatre’s repertoire has grown to include all of the great full-length ballets such as Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty, Giselle, Coppélia, Cinderella and Don Quixote.

From the South Carolina Lowcountry, where life is laced with African ways, comes Ranky Tanky, a quintet with music rooted in a culture that has shaped American art, food, language and attitude. The soulful songs of the Gullah culture are brought to life by this band who mix the low country traditions with large doses of jazz, gospel, funk, and R&B.

Concerts will be held on Sunday, February 24 at 5:00 pm and Monday, February 25, 2019 at 8:00 pm at Hilton Head’s First Presbyterian Church. A reception for the performers, orchestra, and audience will follow Monday’s concert in the church’s Gathering Space. Concert tickets are $30, $45, and $55. Reduced matinee prices are available for children with their accompanying parent. Tickets are on sale now for all concerts, and subscription packages are available for the three remaining concerts.
