September 2019: Editor's Note

It’s ironic that I’m flipping burgers in this photo since I was tasked with writing about my go-to healthy lunch for this, our tenth annual Love Affair with Food, issue. I’ll spare you the anticipation and tell you right here; it’s the Sedona salad with cilantro, lime chili dressing from Healthy Habit. I can’t get enough of that delicious goodness, and I’m sad they won’t be quite as close to our office now that they’ve opened a new location in Park Plaza. That’s one salad I’m willing to drive to the south end for, however.

Another restaurant worth traveling for is the one whose dish is gracing our CB2 cover this month: the Bluffton Brauhaus. Thankfully, you don’t have to catch a flight to Germany to enjoy their authentic cuisine. German-born-turned-Lowcountry-local owner Alfred Kettering has a stellar reputation as a chef, and boy, did he knock it out of the park with this new concept! Order the jägerschnitzel and save room for the apple strudel à la mode. You’ll thank me later.

My grandparents owned restaurants in New York when I was a child, so I think that’s where my affection comes from for cafés, eateries, dives and bars. I remember watching my grandfather sing to his patrons while my grandmother was busy whipping up Italian specialties in the kitchen. In a strange sort of way, maybe restaurants just feel like home to me.

I certainly felt at home trying Nunzio Restaurant + Bar, the newest spot for all things Italian on New Orleans Road. Now that the hordes of visitors have left our island, you can probably get a seat at the bar. This is the best time of year for the locals to venture out again—and our local restaurateurs are ready to welcome you back with open arms.

There’s nothing quite as exciting as finding a new haunt that you can add to your regular rotation when you just don’t feel like cooking and cleaning up the mess. We invite you check out Seven New Restaurants to Savor on page 62 for a peek at what’s new in our area. Our team had a blast doing the “research” for this special feature. Now we need to “research” some gyms to lose all those extra pounds we gained last month. Good thing bathing suit season is almost over!

Enjoy all that is wonderful about September in the South: slightly cooler temps, fall foodie festivals, and just a bit more room on the roads.

Until next month!
