What do you do and who do you do it for?
SmartMarketing Communications is a full service marketing, public relations, creative services and web design company that has been in business for over 30 years. Our Lowcountry clients have included (but aren’t limited to) Charter One Realty, The Don Ryan Center for Innovation, The Cottage Cafe and Bakery, The Old Town Bluffton Inn, The Juice Hive, TedX Hilton Head, Frontlight Building Co., The Village at Wexford and dozens of other start-up/growing businesses. We have offices in New York, New Mexico, North Carolina and, of course, my favorite spot, here!

What are the three most important lessons you have learned building your business?
1. You can’t do it all yourself.
2. You should always hire people smarter and better than you for the job at hand.
3. You have to spend money to make money.

What is a day like “in your heels?”
Four a.m.: Read every breaking news story I can find in all the major papers where our clients are based. Watch as much morning news/as many morning shows as possible; comb through all social media sites to see what’s going on so we can best interact with our followers and clients’ followers. Seven a.m.: At my desk, answering emails. By 9 a.m.: out the door to client meetings. My days vary. Some days I can be in back-to-back meetings (which isn’t my favorite way to spend the day), or it can be in brainstorming/creative meetings with the talented team I have assembled, many of whom have been part of the agency since the beginning (which is my favorite way to spend my day).

What has been the role of luck in your success?
I don’t believe in “luck.” I do, however, believe in the laws of attraction … and that’s been huge! That being said, the success of SmartMarketing has always been and will always be because of the incredible talent and dedication of our team. Yes, we’ve been in the right place at the right time, but it wasn’t because of luck; it was because we were smart enough to be there!

Do you have a favorite motivational quote?
“What would you attempt to do if you knew you couldn’t fail?”

What inspired you to start your business?
The thought of working for the same company day in and day out was so unappealing (and that’s saying it nicely), I didn’t have a choice.

What advice would you give your children about running a successful business?
Always do the right thing, even if it means losing money.

What is your guilty pleasure?
I don’t believe in guilt, but if I had to pick one thing that could be considered a guilty pleasure, it would probably be watching Dancing with the Stars (like from the beginning).
