SNOW WHITE, PAQUITA & COOL HAND LUKE ANNOUNCED FOR UPCOMING SPRING PRODUCTION

Author: CH2 Press Release

The Hilton Head Dance Theatre (HHDT) is excited to announce their
spring production will be an ever colorful and enchanting collection of ballet and jazz. The classical ballet Snow White will anchor for three diverse dance pieces opening March 26, 2010 at the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina. Performances
are scheduled to begin at 7:30 pm March 26th, 2:30 pm and 7:30 pm on Saturday, March 27th and 2:30 pm on Sunday, March 28th. This spring production will be unique this year in that it will be presenting an evening of mixed repertoire‐‐‐
to include Snow White, Paquita & Cool Hand Luke.

“We are excited to set our dancers on stage and welcome audiences to three different dance performances,” said Hilton Head Dance Theatre President Kelly Smith. “This is an exhilarating time for our dancers – we have amazing talent, an
exciting repertoire this spring and a great community with fantastic enthusiasm for what our dancers do. I promise it will be entirely different, equally magical and whimsical production.”

Paquita, a classical ballet with a Spanish flair, will feature Hilton Head Dance School Seniors, Emma Herschberger and Madison Thomas, with returning guest artist, former Joffrey Ballet dancer from Chicago, Peter Kozak. This ballet is a
concert piece taken from the full‐length ballet. It was first performed at the Paris Opera in 1846 and a year later was the debut of Marius Petipa as a Principal Dancer with the Imperial Ballet in St. Petersburg. In 1881, Petipa restaged the
ballet and it is this version that Karena Brock‐Carlyle, Hilton Head Dance School co‐owner, has staged for this performance.

Paquita will be followed by a jazz piece staged by Fosse Dance Captain, and Hilton Head Dance School Jazz instructor, Kathleen Watkins. The magical evening will conclude with the popular fairytale brought to ballet Snow White. One of
the favorite fairy tales of all time comes to life on the ballet stage in this premiere program directed and choreographed by Karena Brock‐Carlyle and John Carlyle.

It’s all here, the beautiful Princess, the evil Queen and her mirror, the seven dwarfs who take Snow White into their home, the poisoned apple, and the Prince who saves her. The eponymous role will be portrayed by Hilton Head Dance
School students Brooke Bishop and Ella Cuda, and the role of the Evil Queen by high school seniors, Tessa Owens and Madison Way. The Prince will be portrayed by Columbia City Ballet Principal Dancer Mark Krieger.

“Although we retained much of what we love of Snow White’s story, our goal was to give audiences more depth, color and drama this spring,” said Smith. “Snow White doesn’t have to just speak to the child in your family, but there’s a part
of her story that touches us all. I have no doubt that our dancers will thrill audiences beyond their greatest expectations and we are honored to have Peter and Mark returning to the lowcountry to help us do just that.”
