SHOPPING

Wandering through eclectic specialty shops is a leisurely way to spend a morning or afternoon. There’s no better place to do it than on Hilton Head Island, a veritable shoppers’ paradise.

From the shaded breezeways of Coligny Plaza and Pineland Station to the waterfront plazas of South Beach, Harbour Town, and Shelter Cove, and every place in between, shoppers will find whatever it is they’re looking for. There’s no mundane strip malls to be found on the island – local retail centers all have a distinctly island feel.

Islanders and tourists alike can browse in upscale boutiques or bargain hunt at local outlet stores. There’s no shortage of specialty shops that entice shoppers with their unique offerings, be they seashells, Christmas items, or candles. The perfect outfit for a night out on the town, a beach sarong, vacation souvenir, the latest fashions for yourself or your home, sporting goods, or a creative gift or collectable can be found in locally owned stores.

Island shopping can be an interactive and entertaining experience as well. Shoppers can build a teddy bear, paint pottery, decorate seashells, or enjoy tye-dying or bead making at local retailers. Those who prefer to observe can watch fudge being made at local sweets shops or see local artisans create eclectic artwork with a Lowcountry feel at Bluffton’s historic Calhoun Street.

Several local retail centers offer more than shopping by providing customers with family entertainment such as magic and puppet shows, sing-a-longs, and musical performances. Others host community exhibits and festivals. Play areas and dining establishments can be found at several island shopping centers.

Hilton Head Island offers shoppers a unique combination – all of the merchandise and variety they’d expect to find in a large, cosmopolitan area on a laid back island that takes pride in small town friendliness, where merchants know both each other, and their customers, by name.

Undoubtedly, the best part of shopping on Hilton Head is the merchants themselves. Service is a priority – providing personal assistance, shipping, and special ordering is the rule rather than the exception. Many of the island’s fine clothiers host trunk shows and have personal shoppers available. The island’s local merchants make knowing and providing exactly what their clientele is looking for their highest priority.
