What’s your sign?
Taurus. I’m strong like a bull.

Most underrated song that, in your opinion, should be a classic:
Whitney Houston’s version of the national anthem. Some people try to phone it in, or change up the tune a bit, and it never flies. It’s an incredible song, and can be difficult to do well, but when it’s done right? Man, I get goosebumps all over.

What’s the biggest compliment you’ve ever gotten from a fan?
Once I sang for a couple’s fiftieth anniversary celebration, and afterwards, they thanked me for making them feel like newlyweds again. That made my heart sparkle!

What is your favorite song to perform?
Ooooh, that’s a tough one. I actually love singing duets, because it gives you a chance to play off the other person and also build your own harmonic line, which is fun to do.

What do you sing in the shower?
Mostly opera, with some Motown and ’70s R&B thrown in for good measure.

Favorite cereal?
Not huge on cereal, but do cheesy grits count? YUM.

At what venue do you most like to perform?
I love the Rooftop at Poseidon. The dance floor allows tons of audience engagement, which is great, plus my friend Cody runs the sound over there, and he’s just wonderful. Tiki Hut stage is awesome too; when everyone is in the groove and dancing in the sand, you can’t beat it!

Most requested song at shows?
Probably Free Fallin’, by Tom Petty. I don’t mind, because it’s a beautiful song.

First concert you attended?
Spice Girls—front row, center, Buffalo, N.Y. in 1998. I regret nothing.

Favorite artist?
Whitney Houston, hands down. For classical music, I love Anna Netrebko.

Place you go to get away from it all?
St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands. It’s absolutely magical. I’ve got some wonderful friends and family down there, and that makes it a special place in my heart.

Do you tweet, gram or book? What’s your handle?
On Insta, we are awelcomedistractionband; on the Book, you can find me at A Welcome Distraction, Carolina Swing Band, and Candice Rae.

Finish this verse as if it were the hook of a song:
Sally went down to the bayou…
She was itchin’ to find her man.
When she spied him, she hog-tied him,
And in the trunk of her car he went!

Who would star as you in the epic retelling of your life on film?
Probably Sandra Bullock. She’s got a certain pluckiness about her that I relate to.

First instrument you learned to play?
Violin. I started playing at age 8.

Song you were thrilled to finally master:
“Quando m’en vo,” by Puccini was one of the hardest arias I’ve ever sung, but when I finally nailed the high note at the end, it was a wonderful feeling.

Who do you like to perform with?
Jos Vicars, of course, (my partner in A Welcome Distraction), and my bandmates in Carolina Swing are so much fun to play with. I actually really love when all the local musicians get together and just jam; that’s my favorite—just making new music with each other, simply for the love of it.

Do you have a side gig?
In my other life, I work as a flight attendant. It’s fun, flexible and I get to travel the world!

What famous musician would you love to sing a duet with?
Stevie Wonder, for sure. It’d be an absolute dream to be one of his backup singers on tour. Call me, Stevie!

What animal do you most identify with?
Probably some sort of panther. I’m big into stretching, climbing trees, and licking myself clean. Just kidding about that last part. :)
