Fresh Produce

Author: Kitty Bartell

Like a patch of juicy strawberries in a summer garden, there’s a new boutique brightening the porch of shops circling Harbour Town Yacht Basin in Hilton Head Island’s Sea Pines Resort. Filled with color, and fun, and a classic summer style, on April 2, Fresh Produce added a sister shop to their Coligny Plaza locale … just in time for summer. “It’s always summer at Fresh Produce,” said co-owner, and 21-year island resident George Mischik. “We sell summer; we sell color; it’s what we do.”

Opening the Coligny Fresh Produce shop 13 years ago with partner Kimberly Mischik, it was George’s parents who started the family retail business with their cool, beach-adjacent shop, Jamaican Me Crazy, where they carried a limited selection of the Fresh Produce clothing line. “With the success we were having there, Fresh Produce asked us if we could find a space that could handle a full Fresh Produce store.” Taking over some available retail space just a few paces closer to the beach from Jamaica Me Crazy, the clothing, accessories, and gifts that make Fresh Produce so … well … fresh, were a hit. With the opening of their Harbour Town shop, Fresh Produce is easily found whether biking, strolling, or riding the trolley to their bustling summer spots.

One of a handful of independent Fresh Produce stores, the Hilton Head locations enjoy being able to fill their shops with everything their customers wish for and want. An extensive selection of Lowcountry-based Spartina purses, bags, jewelry, and now clothing—at both locations—reflects the local character, while pairing perfectly with the Fresh Produce whimsy and vibrant hues. “We wanted to be a locally-owned store that could be a part of the community, but also have some national vendors, whether it’s Fresh Produce, Vera Bradley, or Brighton, that people on vacation will recognize,” Mischik said. “That being said, we want to be local too. We carry She’s Crafty glasswork and necklaces and Little Fish Boateak jewelry.”

The newly opened Fresh Produce in Harbour Town is an intimate, cheerful space brimming with some of the most merry, summer-vibing fashion around—from the Fresh Produce soft fabrics and playful colors and patterns, to scallop-edged short and wild skorts and tees and bathing suits, to dresses that go from beach to summer wedding to family reunion picnics.

Community-minded Mischik has found a lot to appreciate being a local businessman. “I truly enjoy our employees and our customers. People on vacation are happy; they’re smiling and having a good time. It gives you a good vibe.” He and his team share the good vibes via their annual event benefitting the Hilton Head Humane Society, held the Thursday before Mother’s Day. The events have raised close to $30,000, and many dogs have found homes. As new residents of Sea Pines, the Fresh Produce team will be finding the best way to help their community friends there, as well. “Giving back is a huge part of life; it’s important for us to do that.”
This summer, there’s a lot blooming at Fresh Produce.

Fresh Produce is located on Hilton Head Island in Harbour Town at 149 Lighthouse Road, (843) 686-3410, and in Coligny Plaza at 1 North Forest Beach Drive (843) 842-3410. For more information, please visit freshproduceclothes.com.
