The Scoop on Summer Skin Care Plus Fast Facts on Facial Fillers

Sun, Sand & Skin Care
I’m often asked what the best skincare product is, and while there are many that work wonders for wrinkles, texture, tone and sun damage, if I had to choose just one, sunscreen would be the winner by far. Sunscreen is essential for skin health and anti-aging.

There are a few key factors to remember when buying your sunscreen: broad spectrum, water resistance and SPF. A few others to look for are transparent zinc oxide, non-comedogenic, sensitivity-free, fragrance-free and paraben-free. And as far as sun protection goes, make use of those beach umbrellas and cute summer hats!
It’s important to maintain a good skincare regimen so you aren’t fighting the damage from the summer sun this fall. Having a complete skincare routine includes UV protection as well as products offering pigment control, inflammation management, skin barrier repair and antioxidants.

Facial Fillers: Fact or Fiction?
1. Fillers are the same as Botox.
FICTION – Both of these treatments can smooth fine lines and wrinkles, but they are very different treatments altogether. Fillers are designed to add volume and fullness to the skin while Botox is a neurotoxin that is injected into a muscle to decrease the movement, thus smoothing out the skin, softening lines and preventing wrinkles. Unlike Botox, fillers can be used to reshape the nose and for cheek and chin augmentation. Filler results are mostly instantaneous, whereas Botox injections take several days to take effect.

2. Fillers require very little downtime.
FACT – Fillers typically do not require any downtime and most of them can even be done on your lunch break. You may opt for some time off for possible minor swelling and bruising (easily covered by makeup), but most patients carry on with normal activities.

3. Fillers and Botox treatments are only for women.
FICTION – While the majority of patients seeking fillers are women, male patients are increasing and getting great results!

4. Some fillers can be reversed.
FACT – In the rare case you are unsatisfied with the results of your dermal filler, the good news is you don’t have to wait for it to wear off. Hyaluronic acid fillers can be dissolved with a simple injection.

5. Fillers are painful.
FICTION – Getting an injection is never completely pain-free, but the discomfort should be very mild and temporary. The needles are extremely small, a topical numbing cream may be used, and some of the fillers even contain an anesthetic to help with comfort.

6. Fillers require maintenance.
FACT – Fillers are not permanent, so there is some upkeep involved, depending on the type of filler and where it’s used. Some fillers need to be replaced every six months and some can last for over five years.

7. Fillers will make me look fake.
FICTION – This is the biggest myth of all! When injected by a trained and experienced practitioner, results are noticeable but very subtle and natural. Fillers take years away and can immediately make you look well-rested, rejuvenated and more youthful.
