March is Blooming: Spring Fever at the Arts Center!

Author: Andrea Gannon

While the backstage construction of the set and costumes of the Arts Center’s May show Evita are in the works, the excitement continues onstage throughout the entire month of March with non-stop presentations in the Great Performances series, in addition to a couple of special events.

The month of March kicks off with Youth ArtsFest on Saturday, March 3. The Arts Center of Coastal Carolina will be hosting its annual community-wide festival from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. and will include crafts, performing arts workshops, food, and more. Admission is free.

To further highlight youth artists, the Promising Picassos Exhibit in the Arts Center’s Woods Community Room will be open all day with more than 80 works of art on display from Beaufort County youth in grades 3-12. From mixed media to line drawings, photography to collage, these works represent the best of Beaufort County student artwork.

The Island School Council for the Arts Rising Stars Talent Show will be held at 2 p.m. that same day, featuring some of the most talented island youth performing onstage in the Elizabeth Wallace Theater. “Rising Stars” tickets may be reserved in advance by visiting artshhi.com.

Next up, March 7-8, the Celtic Tenors will be bringing their international magic to the stage with three incredible voices and one incredible sound. The Arts Center has added a third show, March 8 at 4 p.m., because of overwhelming demand for this very popular trio.

Mid-month, on March16, party like it’s 1979 when the Arts Center has its annual benefit. Celebrate Studio 54-style during this Disco Ball to benefit the Arts Center! DJ Mike Taylor, of legendary Studio 54 fame, will be spinning records so you can get your groove on. The evening includes ’70s-inspired drinks and hors d’oeuvres, an onstage disco party, revelry in the Backstage Club Lounge, and a short, fun and flashy auction. To reserve seats for the party of the year, call Nancy Smith at (843) 686-3945 × 305 or email nsmith@artshhi.com.

Then, rockers get ready, because The Music of Queen will be onstage March 22-24. Black Jacket Symphony will perform Queen’s award-winning album, A Night at the Opera, plus a collection of Queen’s legendary hits, including songs you love like “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “God Save the Queen,” “’39,” and “Love of My Life.” Critics say this group is like having Freddie Mercury himself in the room.

Families will love the Acrobats of Cirque-Tacular on March 31, with two shows at 4 and 8 p.m. This is an off-beat, acrobatic trip around the globe to explore the world as you thought it was, found it wasn’t, and wish it could be. These elite acrobats, artists, and one-of-a-kind originals create quirky, exciting acrobatic shows with no claims of historical accuracy, but a whole lot of fun!

The entire month of March has something for everyone, to be sure. For tickets, call the Arts Center box office at (843) 842-ARTS (2787) or purchase online at artshhi.com.

The Arts Center of Coastal Carolina is a Broadway-caliber professional theater, located at the entrance to Shelter Cove, 14 Shelter Cove Lane, Hilton Head Island.
