Massage Envy: Well-Being with a Local Focus

It began as a mother-daughter day in early 2009, when Crystal Hodge, her mom, and a friend met-up in Greenville to treat themselves to a little pampering. Hodge was preparing to leave a long tenure as a catastrophic injury trial paralegal in Charlotte, and her plans were still up in the air when she walked into Massage Envy that day. A bit of pampering usually culminates with glowing skin or relaxed muscles; however, when Hodge’s ME experience was over, she walked out with a bonus: a clear picture of her future.

“We all three joined,” Hodge said. “I couldn’t believe that everyday people could get a massage, and at such a great rate. When I walked out of there I said, this is what I’m going to do, and we opened our Bluffton Massage Envy in February 2010.” Hodge and partner Scott Matre found their place relatively quickly within the ME franchise, and once they selected their territory, customers enthusiastically welcomed the locally-owned body care destination. Hodge and Matre added their Savannah Massage Envy in 2012 and the Hilton Head Island location in 2016, providing their professional, personal, touch throughout the Lowcountry, expanding on a vision of running a local business where they are as much a part of the community as their customers are a part of their endeavors.

The menu of services at Massage Envy offers a path to feeling and looking amazing, including Streto Method™ Assisted Total Body Stretch, customized massage, and skin care that mirrors the wellness focus of their clients. “This is just about taking care of your skin and your body,” Hodge said. “As a society, we are on the path of wellness, and I’m happy about that because that’s who we are.” Most ME services are scheduled in one-hour increments, giving customers the opportunity to make self-care an easy proposition.

The Assisted Total Body Stretch program, a series of 10 assisted stretches, was added to the ME services about six months ago, and has become a go-to for those who are already relatively flexible and want to expand their range of motion, and for those who have very little range of motion and want a safe, guided approach to improving their flexibility.

Therapeutic massage with signature services and enhanced therapies are at the core of Hodge’s Massage Envy business. “We customize our massages to meet our client’s needs,” she said. “Every massage should be customized.” An integral part of the local ME experience includes creating a line of communication between clients and their licensed therapists or technicians. Goals are addressed, and with each visit, customers find welcoming team members, and sparkling clean facilities where the mood is set to encourage a tranquil, peaceful state of mind and body. An ME massage concentrates on a client’s goals; routine health, chronic aches and pains, athletic fatigue, injuries, prenatal health, or headaches, neck, and upper back tension. Adding Hot Stone Envy®, Enhanced Muscle Therapy, Aromatherapy, or an Exfoliating Foot Treatment makes the most of the ME stretching and massage experience.

Glow Gurus are Massage Envy’s team of licensed aestheticians who customize skin care treatments and regimes designed to keep skin glowing and feeling great. PCA Skin® and Murad, both premier product lines based on years of scientific research and use, are the foundation on which ME’s Healthy Skin, Specialty, and Enhanced facials are based. “We offer four Murad facials,” Hodge said: “one focused on treating acne, an anti-aging/hydration facial, a Vitamin C facial for sun damage, and one for very sensitive skin.” They also offer Microderm Infusion™ and a PCA Skin® Chemical Peel.

“PCA Skin provides products and treatments for physicians, medical offices, and aestheticians,” said ME licensed aesthetician Friderika Komzak. “With over two decades in the business, their products are excellent; their ingredients are very good. We recommend a peel first, then two weeks later, I would do a microderm so we can vacuum all the dead skin cells; two weeks later you can have another chemical peel. You can rotate it. Two weeks later you can have a relaxing facial.”

In addition to her licensed team of professionals, Hodge’s front-of-house staff makes sure clients have whatever they need, rarely missing a beat when welcoming members by name, and providing an exceptional experience. “We are membership based,” Hodge said. “Members pay $65 a month, and that includes a one-hour service with any additional services for $45. As long as your membership is active, you get that credit every month, and if you don’t use it, it rolls over to the next month.”

With nearly 1,800 members across three locations, Hodge and her ME team provide their clients with glowing skin and relaxed muscles…and who knows…now and then a moment of clarity. Bonus.
