Hilton Head Preparatory School opens the new school year with the Upper School performance of John Cariani’s Almost, Maine. Love, winter and the fictional town of Almost, Maine will come alive when Prep’s fall show runs at the Hilton Head Preparatory School Main Street Theatre November 9-12, 2017.

Hilton Head Prep’s first show of the 2017-2018 season also celebrates the return of Peggy Trecker White as director. Trecker White directed Prep shows for three years including Little Mermaid, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Godspell, and helped solidify Prep’s strong performing arts reputation. As director for five summers at the Intermediate Musical Theatre Department at Interlochen Center for the Arts, she brings a wealth of experience. She is a founding member of Lean Ensemble Theatre, where she has directed and starred in several of their shows and has traveled and worked in theatre internationally. The students are so excited to be working again with Trecker White. “I am beyond thrilled to have Mrs. Peggy back as director. Working under her inspiring direction and guidance is such a humbling experience,” said Prep senior Shannon Hegarty, who has had lead roles in several Prep plays. “The amount of work she puts in for her students is infinite. We dearly love Mrs. Peggy.”

Trecker White chose Almost, Maine as her returning debut because the students had studied the play last school year and really wanted to perform it. She has fond memories of starring in the show several years ago with the South Carolina Repertory Theatre and is looking forward to producing the show.

“I adore the characters in Almost, Maine and the situations they find themselves in, because I think every one of us has experienced the excitement of falling in love and the ache of losing it,” she said. “The students get to work on a piece that is both funny and heartfelt and really dig into their characters and show the humanity of taking risks and putting yourself out there.”

Almost, Maine—2016’s most produced play—is a series of nine scenes about trying to make meaningful connections. The offbeat, authentic residents fall in and out of love in the fictional town of Almost, Maine. Each scene features a different couple seeking a sense of meaning in the chilly, unchartered wilderness of love. It’s winter; it’s love; it’s starry nights; it’s snowballs and hot chocolate. It’s magical and anything can happen.

A number of seasoned theatre kids are taking part in the show as well as a few students new to the stage. Seniors Caylin Campis, Kacy Jones and Shannon Hegarty have been committed performers for Prep for several years and are working to mentor newcomers Michael and Aubrey Zoodsma. Rounding out the cast, you’ll find familiar faces in Keegan Crotty, Justin Stone, Scout Yokley, Avery Campbell, Luke Herman, Frank Milbourn and Maggie Zasztowt. Be sure to mark your calendar to see all these talented students again in Prep’s winter show, Les Miserables, February 21-25, 2018.

Performances of Almost, Maine are November 9-12 at the Hilton Head Preparatory School Main Street Theatre, Thursday-Saturday at 7:30 p.m., with a Sunday at 2 p.m. For tickets and information, visit hhprep.org or call (843) 715-8510. Tickets will also be available for purchase at the door.
