Jazz Lovers Unite!

Author: Carol Galli

Jazz Lovers of the Lowcountry are singing a happy tune in a major key since their first attempt at a Summer Jazz Fest proved a huge success. According to marketing director, Carole Galli, when the idea was proposed, it was noted that an audience might be hard to come by on June 17 (the third Sunday in June, Father’s Day). But, thanks to a group of women who found a way to give their husbands something besides a golf shirt or a new putter, the concert sold out two weeks prior to the event.

A fundraiser for JLLC, the event featured the finest musicians in town, all donating their time and talent to the newly-formed organization whose mission is to perpetuate jazz in the Lowcountry. The two-hour program included pianists Bob Alberti, Ron Burton, Teri Rini Powers and Lavon Stevens. Mark Husbands, of Headliners fame, played percussion, with George Sheck on bass, Bob Masteller on brass and Carole Galli providing vocals. Jazz Corner owner, Bob Masteller, provided the venue free of charge to the organization.

Established in 2005, Jazz Lovers of the Lowcountry is committed to supporting outstanding Lowcountry artists, bringing in quality talent from other parts of the country and developing an outreach program for young musicians in the area who show a penchant for jazz. Program committee chair, Ron Burton scouts artists in South Carolina, Georgia and Florida to provide Hilton Head audiences with a wide variety of quality jazz.

JLLC presents a concert from 7-9 p.m. on the third Sunday of each month, excluding December, June, July and August. The 2007-2008 season begins in September in a new venue, the Coligny Theatre, and will open with the incomparable Bill Prince, master of seven instruments, accompanied by the Amelia Island Jazz Festival All Stars.

JLLC, a non profit organization, invites you to join them in their quest for the best in Jazz entertainment. A standard membership is $75, with concert admission price of $5. (Non members pay $20.) Renewals before September 30 will be discounted to $65. Check out the complete list of upcoming concerts and get your membership application at www.jazzloversclub.com.
