Annual Cooks & Books is back!
Author: Special to CH2
On Sunday, March 5, The Literacy Center’s signature fundraising event, Cooks & Books is back by overwhelming demand. The event supports programs of The Literacy Center, whose mission is to improve literacy for all people in Beaufort County by providing the reading, writing, math and speaking skills needed to be successful at work, with their families and in our community. TLC is the only literacy nonprofit in Beaufort County.
The event, for foodies and book lovers alike, will kick off with a “VIP Meet the Authors” Champagne brunch—an intimate gathering for only 150 people to meet participating authors, purchase their books and have them personalized.
Corner Perk Café is supplying endless champagne to complement light brunch fare, and The Farm will sample specialty cocktails. The event includes a silent auction, featuring exciting items such as a Hudson’s Oyster Roast for 10, Night Out for four in a BMW limo, Claude and Uli’s dinner and theater tickets, an Orlando home and golf package, a three-hour yacht trip with food and libations for 12 people, and more. Want one of these great packages? You can keep an eye on the bidding to try for a bargain or you can “buy it now” and just walk out the door!
The food tasting and book fair opens at 11 a.m. for an afternoon of delicious samples from local restaurants and access to authors autographing their latest best sellers. You can chat with restaurant chefs, get the recipe for the dish you love, and snag coupons for dining discounts. You might enjoy meatball sliders, gelato in a dozen flavors, Ahi Tuna bites, shrimp and grits, lobster tacos, jerk chicken or gourmet grilled cheese! You’ll sample from Frankie Bones, Skillets, Mulberry Street Trattoria, Ela’s Blu Water Grill, Red Stripes Caribbean Cuisine and Lounge, Butchers Market and Deli, and more.
Follett Booksellers presents the “Writer’s Block” book fair, with a percentage of proceeds going to The Literacy Center. This is your big chance to meet authors all in one gathering that you’ll be hard pressed to find again! Cassandra King, will share Moonrise and A Lowcountry Heart. In addition, catch Mary Alice Monroe, Mary Kay Andrews, Patti Callahan Henry, Pat Branning, Erin Murray and Lydia Inglett, and see new authors Sansing McPherson, Brian Thiem, Karen Cauller, and Lilly Ann Eilers.
The “Heat is On” Chef’s competition will entertain you as they cook from a mystery basket, competing in a dead heat to win the coveted Cooks & Books trophy. Take a chance at the raffle to win spa packages, wine and liquor baskets, golf outings and more. You might just win all the money in our 50/50 raffle. But when you attend Cooks & Books, you will always be a winner!
