Calibogue Cafe & Trading Company

Like No Other Place on Earth

A marvelous Sea Pines breeze was cooling the afternoon sun. Retired Time Warner corporate executive, Bob Alpaugh, and his son, Ryan, momentarily paused in their busy day to relax and enjoy the Southern weather. Calling out warm welcomes to regular customers who were stopping in at Calibogue Café and Trading Company, father and son are obviously well pleased with their recent purchase.

Having entertained clients at the Heritage for years and having owned several businesses previously, the next step was a natural one. “I always loved it here, and my son wanted a restaurant; so we bought this one and moved down,” said Bob.

Well, it wasn’t quite that simple. “It was pretty hectic trying to sell houses, buy here and revamp the restaurant. Working and living with my dad was another challenge,” Ryan joked. Recently married, now at least part of the family is here; but Ryan said, “I still miss family and friends in New Jersey.”

Yet as head chef at Calibogue Café and Trading Company, flourishing in Sea Pines Center since October, Ryan has little time to consider what he left behind. He and his dad are so happy making sure everything is perfect in the café they consider to be “like no other place on Earth,” there is hardly a moment to think about anything else. For islanders seeking a break from cooking or visitors vacationing from everything, the café offers breakfast, lunch, afternoon sandwiches and a ravishing dinner. “Our pastries are baked fresh every morning, and customers love the variety of coffee beans for grinding,” noted Ryan. Around the lunch hour, deli delights are available for enjoying at one of the outdoor tables or for taking to the beach. The café even offers the rare opportunity to purchase fresh products such as shrimp, salmon and Buckhead beef. Then there are the fabulous wines— “at reasonable prices,” offered Bob.

If evening plans call for the theatre, pop in for an early bird special from 5-6 p.m., for only $14.95, including a complimentary glass of wine. On most Friday evenings, from 6-9 p.m., enjoy live entertainment. On those nights when you would rather eat in, just give them a call and order any menu item, from their scrumptious filet mignon to Ryan’s amazing encrusted salmon, and it will be prepared to perfection for pick-up. Drop in between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Sunday for brunch with complimentary champagne or mimosa.

An accomplished chef, Ryan strives to escape from the kitchen to discover how everyone is enjoying his presentations. Through his years of experience with top chefs and restaurants around the country, he has a special flair for deliciously combining his own array of spices. “Actually, someone told me they never knew meatloaf could look so pretty and taste so good!” said Ryan. To be certain customers remain happy, Ryan said, “We actually read the comment cards.”

A stroll through the café encourages customers to linger in the gourmet gift area. Admiring glances discover beautiful handmade martini glasses from California, WoodWick candles and unique crystal containers doubling as room fresheners.

Everyone loves the Pygmalion story and the ensuing transformation. This rewarding surprise awaits at Calibogue Café, where the Alpaugh team has accomplished amazing results, offering a one-stop opportunity rarely available at a spot that truly is “like no other place on Earth.”
