The Flooring Pros of Hilton Head:Something Lovely Under-Foot
Author: Lynnie Leavenworth
There’s an expression popularized in the oriental rug business: “If you don’t know rugs, know your rug dealer.” Knowing Nasser Shaheen, owner of Commercial Flooring & Design Services, Inc., The Flooring Pros of Hilton Head, will translate to having the finest flooring products underfoot. With nearly 30 years of local experience sourcing, selling and installing carpet, hardwood, laminate, custom rugs, porcelain tile and luxury vinyl tile (LVT) flooring, Shaheen is meeting and exceeding the expectations of both commercial and residential customers.
Shaheen’s family’s oriental rug business in Canton, Ohio provided the foundation on which he has built one of the longest running flooring companies in Beaufort County. Incorporated in South Carolina in 1989, starting with a few strategic supplier partners and working out of his home, Shaheen grew Commercial Flooring with clients like the Westin Resort, Holiday Inn and Marriott as well as several high profile architects and national contractors. The company is rebranding with the name The Flooring Pros of Hilton Head.
Transitioning from a home-based business to a large, but non-air conditioned building, and finally graduating to a beautiful studio showroom and warehouse on the island’s north end, is how Shaheen has carefully managed the growth of his business. “The premise we work on is to deliver the best value in products and service,” he said, “meaning we have the highest quality installation, which can measure against the top installers anywhere. We don’t just put people out there; we have a seasoned staff working in-house to supervise installation in the field.”
Dave Dulaney and Morris Young make up Shaheen’s core team, providing the right mix of experience and skill to manage every project from inspiration to installation and clean up. “I do most outside measuring,” Shaheen said. “Dave does a lot of the internal work; he’s the king of the spreadsheet. Morris has been in the design business here on the island since the early ’70s. His primary function is maintaining communication with the consumer and installation teams.”
Each team member is intimately aware of the particulars of every project, Shaheen said.
“There is no disconnect [for the customer]. When something is sold, the guy measuring it knows what is being sold along with the scope of the project. When we receive the product, we can validate that it’s the right item before it is sent out to the job site. There is a lot more control over a job in this store than in most any other store of this type.”
All that insider knowledge translates to successful outcomes, because the details have already been considered, and every step is managed with care. “When I send Morris out, he is there on the job,” Shaheen said. “If there is a concealed problem that went undiscovered during measuring and estimating, he identifies what we need to do and makes sure it gets done.”
With myriad materials and finishes, the company installs flooring and sometimes wall backsplashes and wood paneling to satisfy the form and functional needs of nearly any design project. The most popular floors today are hardwood or hardwood-looks. They can be made in luxury vinyl, porcelain stone or even cork. Most often the wood is installed throughout the home, and if there is a screened lanai or glassed in porch, a complimentary tile made to look like wood can complete the look of bringing the outdoors inside.
DuChateau Hardwood Flooring is one of the many exceptional manufacturers available at The Flooring Pros. The Atelier Series is a signature collection of hand-crafted European hardwood veneers, manufactured in the USA and finished by hand in San Diego, California to achieve a look where no two boards are alike. Production without VOCs (volatile organic compounds) and large quantities of chemicals allows a floor to be produced that is among the most earth-friendly to people and pets.
With standard recycling practices in place, Shaheen said The Flooring Pros is a globally aware company that works to be good to the consumer as well as the environment. “Good planets are hard to replace,” he said. Globally and locally concerned, Shaheen has been a member of Rotary International for more than 30 years, both in Canton, Ohio and with the local VanLandingham Rotary Club on Hilton Head Island, where being a part of the larger effort aligns well with his personal and professional beliefs.
“As an individual, you can’t do a whole lot in the world. But if you lock up with a group of like-minded individuals, you can move mountains,” Shaheen said. “Our Rotary club is one of the tops in the country. We are a very progressive, strong club doing great things in the community and around the world.”
Shaheen’s commitment to community and customer has helped build his business and enriched his life. If you don’t know about flooring, or even if you do know a little something, getting to know Nasser Shaheen and The Flooring Pros of Hilton Head will result in something quite wonderful underfoot. Expect your expectations to be exceeded.
