Hilton Head Cleaning Services: Focused and Flexible

Not much feels better than a spic-n-span, super squeaky clean home. The tricks and tips for making that happen have been passed down for generations from the first known broom maker in 1767 Massachusetts, to cleaning supply pitchmen shouting into our living rooms between television shows. “We currently have 14 fulltime employees and we add 50 or 60 staff members during the busy season,” Kety said. “We do residential, offices, commercial, vacation homes, or villas; we also offer professional window cleaning services, carpet cleaning, and we do exterior soft-spray cleaning. We offer commercial laundry services for businesses or other cleaning companies who may need these services; we will also do laundry services for businesses that have their own linens.”

Chris Gomez moved to Hilton Head Island from Spain with his family at the age of one. His father provided Chris with an entrepreneurial road map. “I looked up to my father. He came to America not speaking the language; he was deaf. He was a master European men’s tailor. He opened a business in New York and then came to Hilton Head Island and opened a business here. Being deaf didn’t handicap him,” Chris said. “Walter Cronkite once mentioned him as one of the best communicators he knew. He didn’t speak the language, but he found a way to communicate.”

That kind of perseverance and commitment to service becomes a part of your DNA, and the Gomezes knew they had something unique to offer the cleaning services industry in the Lowcountry: flexibility and superior customer service. That includes a pledge to assign the same team to specific clients whenever possible, after an initial consultation, designed to determine the customer’s specific wants and needs. “We always work in teams of two,” Kety said. “There is always someone who knows the job and what the client wants. We try to send the same team to any repeat clients, and our clients love that. We also have a lot of on-call clients. Their preferences are on file. If they call and request service, we look them up and we know their regular team members. We’re flexible; if you want the same team members, we’ll make it happen. If you need an emergency cleaning, we may send another team that is also great.”

A graduate of the University of South Carolina’s Hotel, Restaurant, and Tourism Administration program, Kety brings an understanding of the value of flexibility in any service industry, along with the understanding that you are only as good as the team you assemble. “Employees are key,” she said. “Some of our 2008 staff are still with us. Our office manager, Leticia Caballero has been with us since 2009. She’s a very important part of our business; she’s like family now. ”

“It’s pretty unusual to find somebody with the character to work for you and take the business on as if it were her own business—that’s Leticia,” Chris said. “She’s amazing.”

Kety and Chris appreciate how hard this business can be and are proud of their team’s hard work and commitment. “It’s a very stressful business, especially during the summer. We try to take care of our employees, and we are flexible with their schedules,” Kety added.

The Gomezes and Hilton Head Cleaning Services are committed to taking care of others in the community as well. Sometimes just having a clean home during a particularly rough period can make a world of difference. As a member business with Cleaning for a Reason, a national organization of volunteers providing services to women with cancer, Kety says it’s a great way to use the resources they have to benefit those in need. “The Cleaning for a Reason people will identify women in the area who need services while they are going through cancer treatment, and we will provide them.”

As the business continues to grow and gather loyal customers, the Gomezes find their roots settling deep in the Lowcountry soil. Chris and Kety met at Hilton Head Prep in 1994 when she came to the island from Spain to study for a year. Recently celebrating their fourteenth wedding anniversary, they have three children: nine-year-old Fernando, an avid soccer and basketball player; eight-year-old Ketina who dances, is a member of Girls on the Run, and plays the piano; and two-year-old Ines.

Traveling to Spain each year, the family happily identifies with both their South Carolina home and their Spanish home, “The children have their friends here and they have friends in Spain. They love the food from both countries. It’s fun to watch,” Chris said.

Providing a broad range of cleaning services, the Gomez team welcomes the opportunity to listen to their customers and even go off-menu, whether that’s a special project, or a particularly unique surface requiring special attention. If a service is not listed, it is probably possible. HHCS provides it all and streamlines the process with one all-inclusive monthly invoice.

“We just want to have a happy customer at the end of the day. I lose sleep if someone isn’t happy,” Chris said.
