Hilton Head Christian Academy is the recent recipient of a $10,000 grant from the Women in Philanthropy Endowment Fund through the Community Foundation of The Lowcountry.

The Women in Philanthropy Endowment Fund opened up the grant application process to applicants that captured their 2015 theme, “Protecting our Lowcountry Environment.” Hilton Head Christian Academy collaborated with the non-profit organization Experience Green to write their grant application, outlining their five-phase Garden Project titled, “Edible Education for Sustainability.” The garden will be integrated into HHCA’s K-12 curriculum.

Experience Green’s long-term goal is to improve stewardship of the environment, care of the people and growth of economic prosperity. Experience Green’s founder, Teresa Wade said, “This exciting project can serve as a tangible learning example for schools, groups, individuals and more about sustainable practices for onsite food production, using cisterns for water capture, composting, a greenhouse built from plastic bottles, hydroponics, material reuse and more.”

For HHCA, this is an integral piece of the overall Health & Wellness Program, with the mission to educate the faculty and students about healthy living through curriculum and their daily interactions with program director Wendy Cummings.

Whole Kids Foundation has also approved a $2,000 grant for HHCA that will be used specifically to fund the long-term project. “I am a huge supporter of the proposed garden coming to Hilton Head Christian Academy to directly support resident chef Brooks’ Healthy Lunch Program,” said Abby Wirth, Whole Foods Hilton Head marketing team leader and community liason. Other organizations supporting the HHCA garden project are: Atlantic Star Designs, i2 Recycle and Steve DeSimone Construction.

HHCA is planning the garden project groundbreaking for Monday, October 5 at 11:30 a.m. and is currently seeking additional community volunteers and donations. For additional information, contact Wendy Cummings at wcummings@hhca.org.
