A Trio of Performances at the Arts Center:Gullah Kinfolk, The Beatles Experience & Masters of Soul

Author: Andrea Gannon

The month of August brings a tantalizing trifecta of great performances to the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina with something for everyone. It all kicks off with a celebration of the colorful Gullah culture, featuring Aunt Pearlie Sue and The Gullah Kinfolk as they perform the original musical, The Gullah Journey from Africa to America…the Circle Unbroken, August 5 & 6. The lovable Aunt Pearlie Sue is the creation of award-winning storyteller, actress and singer Anita Singleton-Prather, and is based on Singleton-Prather’s grandmother.

Prather’s appeal has stretched across the nation, as she has made appearances in Forrest Gump, on Good Morning America, the Food Network channel holiday special, “Christmas Across America,” hosted by Rachel Ray, and on her own one-woman PBS show, “Tales from the Land of Gullah.” Regionally, she has performed at the Beaufort Gullah Festival, Penn Heritage Days Festival, and at Spoleto USA, entertaining audiences with Gullah-flavored folktales and songs for more than 20 years.

The Gullah Kinfolk is composed of singers, musicians and storytellers who will astound and charm the audience in this musical tale about the African experience in America. Tickets are $34 for adults and $22 for children ages 4-15.

Then, it’s a tribute to the Fab Four with Yesterday & Today: The Interactive Beatles Experience, August 12-13. Most everyone has a favorite Beatles hit and a story associated with that song—about a first love, an unforgettable road trip or a touching family memory.’

This “request-your-favorites” Beatles show takes the incredible music of the Beatles and personalizes it with the stories and perspectives of audience members, who will be invited to share their requests in the lobby before the show. This sensational experience will immerse the audience in the sights and sounds of one of the greatest groups of all time. The Beatles Experience gets to the heart of the love affair we have with Beatles’ music: the soundtrack of our lives. Tickets are $45 for adults and $30 for children ages 4-15.

On August 21 & 22, the 2014/15 Great Performances series comes to a soul-stirring finale with the non-stop music of Masters of Soul, the ultimate tribute to Motown and soul, authentically reproducing the look, choreography, style and sound that profoundly influenced the history of popular music.

You’ll be tempted to dance in the street (or maybe the aisles) as you listen to the incredible harmonies made famous by many of the greatest recording acts of all-time, including The Temptations, Gladys Knight & The Pips, Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell, Four Tops, Smokey Robinson & the Supremes, The Jackson Five, Martha Reeves & the Vandellas, Stevie Wonder, The Commodores and many more!

The 10-person cast of Masters of Soul has performed to numerous sold-out audiences and garnered rave reviews across the country at venues ranging from community theaters and universities, to performing arts venues and concert halls. Masters of Soul is a celebration of the legendary songs and performers that defined soul music. Get ready, ’cause here they come! Tickets are $46 for adults and $30 for children ages 4-15.
