Kimberly Morris thought she was swimming and studying her way into a teaching career, however, the economy and her internal compass lead her in a different direction. Morris began her Mattress Firm career rather accidentally. Tagging along on a friend’s job search in Atlanta, she was offered a part-time position that worked well with her student-teaching assignment. After graduation, teaching opportunities were few and far between, so Morris began searching for work closer to the coast. “I feel like I’ve had a magnet that has just attracted me to the water. Now I’m at the coast; I’m on the island; I can’t get any closer to the water, so things are good,”
As Mattress Firm’s area manager and market trainer for South Carolina, Morris is head-quartered at their new Hilton Head Island shop, also overseeing the Bluffton location. Plans are in the works to open three new locations by the end of the year, so Morris is operating with a full-speed-ahead approach, preparing seven new trainees. “Because we’re a locally-owned franchise, I get to be involved in all aspects of the business. It’s challenging and fun at the same time,” she explains.
The real rewards of her work come from the relationships she builds with her clients. “You meet somebody with a problem, like back pain, and they think there’s nothing they can do to fix it. They hate everything about buying a mattress, and then you make that connection with them that kind of changes their life. They end up loving their bed, and they had a good experience at Mattress Firm.”
A bit like swimming upstream, Morris’s manipulative magnet has pulled her to where she has always known she wanted to be; happily combining career and classroom in a way even she couldn’t have imagined. All while living at the water’s edge … bliss.
For Ali Heavener, city manager, and broker-in-charge for D.R. Horton, each day is different. Handling city operations, including land acquisition, sales, marketing, and construction, some days call for a business suit and others a hard hat or jeans. “As long as I can throw on my favorite pair of heels, I am good to go!” Ali said.
While attending graduate school, Ali worked in the fashion district in NYC selling textiles. “I have always enjoyed the variety that a career in sales brings. Each day brings a new challenge, and the opportunity to meet great people,” she said.
Ali started in real estate in 2004 and fought through the downturn by forming good habits in business and always keeping her focus on what she wanted to achieve. Entering her fourth year with D.R. Horton, she said, “It has been a tremendous experience. I have a wonderful mentor who has taught me so much about homebuilding and land acquisitions, which has expanded my knowledge in the industry, and I am forever grateful.”
Along with her career, Ali has three children ages, 7, 6 and 18 months. “I am grateful for the support and understanding of my husband, for helping me achieve my goals in life to have both a family and a career,” she said.
D.R. Horton has a strong belief in a work/life balance. “Working for this company has made it possible for me to have a fabulous career and still raise a family,” Ali said. “I will never forget during my interview being told ‘never miss time with your family, because you can never get that time back.’ Many times, women have to make a choice between family and career. I am lucky enough to have both. The people that I work with have become my second family, and it makes it nice to go to work each day.”
D.R. Horton has 16 active communities from Beaufort, S.C. to Hinesville, Ga. and many more new exciting communities on the horizon.

Amie Baima is the first to admit that working with her for twenty years is no piece of cake. So how has Paula McDonald- Snodgrass managed to do just that with a smile on her face? “We compliment each other really well,” said Paula. “Some things that drive me absolutely crazy are no big deal to her. Transversely, some of her pet peeves just roll right off my back.”
Their relationship began in the mid-nineties at the Coligny Bakery where they worked together for long hours. “Anyone who can work with me at 4am is saint,” laughed Amie. “There were days when we would be up for 24 hours straight catering for the Family Circle Tennis tournament or baking pies for Thanksgiving. That’s a test of a good business relationship!”
As with any good partnership, they each have their areas of expertise; Amie primarily runs the kitchen and Paula keeps things running smoothly up front. “She actually keeps things running “smoothly” everywhere,” Amie remarked with a smirk. “Paula is my “filter”- to the wait-staff, the chefs and sometimes even the customers!”
“It’s not what you say, it’s how you say it,” explained Paula with a smile.
Whatever the chemistry, it’s obviously working for Skillets Café & Grill, which will celebrate 20 years next month. The restaurant has transformed over the years from a breakfast hot spot to a breakfast, lunch and dinner eatery serving non-stop daily from 7am- 10pm (in season).
Louette: A Boutique
32 Palmetto Bay Road, Suite 9-A
Hilton Head Island
Just above the rack of multicolored Turkish Towels at Louette, hangs a yellow hand-painted sign that reads, “Make Lemonade.” This could be a reference to the recycled, reclaimed and repurposed materials that make up most of the decor in this charming boutique. But for owner, Heather Quinn, the phrase encapsulates the attitude that has taken both her and Louette to where they are today.
Heather grew up in Atlanta, spending summer weekends at her Grandmother’s house in Sea Pines. At “Grandy’s”, Heather discovered classic dresses, antiques and just-completed oil paintings bearing Grandy’s looping signature, “Louette.” Grandy taught Heather to appreciate what she calls “the simple loveliness in life.” When Heather and her husband, Brian, relocated to Hilton Head five years ago, Grandy was the first person they called.
In 2012, Heather lost her first child, Harper, to complications during pregnancy. With the help of friends from her work in public relations, Heather formed the Harper Project, South Carolina’s chapter of the Zoe Foundation (www.zoe-foundation.org), to help other mothers suffering from infant loss. As Heather considered how to move forward, Brian encouraged her to open a boutique. She had talked about it for years. It would be familiar but full of wonder. It would be a place where the timeless could mingle with the newly created. She gave her store the same name that graces her grandmother’s paintings.
Heather hand-picks every product carried by Louette. The selection of women’s clothing, home accents, baby accessories and unique gifts is punctuated by up and coming designers and artists, with an emphasis on local and sustainable lines.
Heather is expecting her second child in July. Stop into Louette, though, and you might find her, or Grandy, there to tell you all about the latest clothes, jewelry and accessories to hit the shelves.
Garden Gate Nursery
2 State of Mind Street
Margie Fox is the driving force behind the look and feel of Garden Gate. She is a true Lowcountry Girl. After going to college at the University of South Carolina, where she studied interior design, she returned to Hilton Head to expand her family’s successful irrigation business. She purchased a small garden center in Beaufort, and proceeded to throw out convention. Everybody knows that garden centers have rows of shrubs, pretty flowers and stacks of soil. Margie decided to go a different route. She created what she likes to call a “Boutique Garden Center”. She indeed has shrubs, pretty flowers and unusual plants, but she brought her design background to the fore and scoped out interesting and delightful interior accents, gifts and one of a kind items. When you come into the Garden Gate, you are greeted with a wealth of items that spark ideas and let your imagination bloom.
Margie moved to Bluffton in 1993 and was on the lookout for a Bluffton location for the Nursery. When she discovered the Calhoun Street Promenade and it’s live-work environment, she knew she had found the perfect match. The building at 2 State of Mind Street is home to her business, family and is the center of her many community endeavors. She is on the board for the Bluffton Chamber of Commerce, a past board member of the Bluffton Merchants association and is active in her daughter’s school. Like I said, a true Lowcountry Girl.
The Adfish Group
Jan Gourley, Creative/Partner
To say the advertising and marketing industry has changed significantly since Jan started her first agency in Atlanta over 30 years ago is a bit of an understatement. The one thing that hasn’t changed is the ability to create and build a unique brand, and develop its strategic marketing position. That would sum up Jan’s passion for pouring her heart and soul into the brands she has been lucky enough to represent. An award-winning creative and noted industry professional, she is currently working on branding some of the agency’s newest ventures. The AdFish Group, which she manages with husband and business partner, Gordon Gourley have partnered with Michael T. Owens, President/CEO of the Tourism Leadership Council to co-found the inaugural Savannah Food & Wine Festival taking place this November. Jan and Gordon have also partnered with Keith Bach, PGA Professional and President/CEO of the Anthem Media Group to launch the Hilton Head Island Golf & Tennis Festival in late February 2014. The Festival will be a hybrid of golf tournaments, tennis matches, golf & tennis expo – along with PGA professional educational events taking place throughout the Island. In addition, The AdFish Group is totally dedicated to providing advertising, marketing and PR services to its outstanding group of core clients, The Westin Hilton Head Island Resort & Spa, AccessHealth Lowcountry, the Junior Players Golf Academy and more.
The Westin Hilton Head Island Resort & Spa

Hilton Head Island
Chris Scheriff, Director of Human Resources
It’s hard to imagine The Westin without thinking about Chris. She is literally the pulse of The Westin’s heart-of-home (its associates) and she’s always ahead of curve when it comes to planning human resource needs for the resort. Chris has over 30 years of hotel experience, and has been on Hilton Head for over 25 years. A teacher at heart, Chris is an outstanding mentor and coach, specializing in training her staff in “the culture of guest services”. She credits the outstanding leadership of new General Manager, Tim Freisen (yes a man!) and the resources provided by Starwood Hotels & Resorts and Westin ® for providing the training tools required for the HR team to excel.
Gail Wargo, Director of Sales & Marketing
Gail’s enthusiasm and love for what she does is simply contagious. She’s a dedicated professional, who is focused on enhancing The Westin Hilton Head Island Resort & Spa’s brand and image as one of the premier oceanfront destinations, not only on the east coast – but the entire country. With over 30 years of experience at Marriott, Gail was most recently a National and Global Sales Manager and a National Sales School training facilitator. Now with the renovation fully completed, and the resort exceeding projections for leisure and business travel, she and her team have reason to celebrate the resort’s success!
Kathy Steele, Director of Heavenly Spa® by Westin
When you hear Kathy Steele describe exactly what a guest experience at the Spa will be like, you begin to understand why the Heavenly Spa® by Westin was named the “#1 Spa in South Carolina and one of the Best Spas in the Country”. She and the staff of the Heavenly Spa begin the “pampering calm” for each guest as soon as they enter the doors of the Spa. An experienced spa professional, Kathy has a keen understanding of the importance of the Spa to the entire resort, offering visiting guests an on-property opportunity to de-stress, relax and rejuvenate, while either vacationing or on business. Savvy locals have long taken advantage of this pampering island escape in their own backyard.
Celebrate Hilton Head
10 Capital Drive
Hilton Head Island
In September of 2006, Celebrate Hilton Head burst onto the scene with a fresh perspective on Hilton Head Island, Bluffton and the surrounding Lowcountry. At the helm was a team of young women in their 20s, making up the rules as they went along. Now entering its eighth year, the magazine has evolved into a well-respected publication with hundreds of advertisers and a monthly distribution to over 47,000 locals and visitors each month. Much has been said on the importance of work/ life balance, and the ladies of CH2/ CB2 are pros at making work fun and having a life outside of the office.
In her role as art director, Kelly Stroud weaves her magic mouse to make words and artwork meld together in eye -popping fashion. In her spare time (when she’s not training to be the next Serena Williams) she enjoys pillaging the local waters for a fresh catch of the day. She may not be Betty Crocker yet, but look out.
Catherine Davies is liaison to the client where the creation of ads is concerned, but her expertise does not end there. She also handles the constant updating of the website and gets the award for “Sunniest Disposition.” If you catch Catherine out of the office, she will most likely be whizzing by you on a bike, training for a triathlon in Greenville next month.
Ashton Kelley has been with CH2 from almost the beginning and excels in her current role as senior sales manager. Don’t be fooled by her sweet exterior—she will sell you an ad before you know what hit you. This multitasker is currently in the final stages of planning her nuptials to Mr. Clark Fons, which will take place at Honey Horn in November of this year.
Kim Crouch is key part of the stellar sales team, and has been a Hilton Head Islander for almost her entire life. She is our resident mommy and manages to juggle a successful career and her energetic eight-year-old son, Jackson. “Social butterfly” is an understatement for this lady, who keeps us all turning out at fun events and parties around town.
Kandace Wightman is the newest member of the sales team, and she hails from Niagara Falls, N.Y. A transplant to the south about five years ago, Kandace was a contestant in CH2’s Bachelorette of 2013 contest, and after spending some time with her we knew she would be a great addition.
Hunter Kostylo is part of the art department and recently came on full time after graduating from the College of Charleston. She still has a great fondness for Chuck town though, and can often be found hanging with her friends on King Street for the weekend. She also loves cat videos. It’s a strange obsession, but we love her anyway.
Lily Bartell is by far the most efficient member of our team, regularly running circles around all of us without breaking a sweat. Unfortunately we only get to have her during the summer, as she is currently about to enter her sophomore year at Bowling Green State University (on a golf scholarship, no less). We predict Lily will be the first woman POTUS.
Rounding out the crew is Maggie Washo, publisher and fearless leader. Besides having a great idea now and then, all she really does is make sure all the photographers and writers get their pieces submitted on time—which really is a full time job. If she isn’t at her desk, she is most likely at Walt Disney World, or spoiling her giant Bernese Mountain Dog, Lucy.
Together this dynamic team finds a new way to Celebrate Hilton Head and its residents month after month.

Swell New Media
Erin Laytham Lentz
Smart business owners are using popular social networking sites to obtain multiple streams of traffic, but many individuals are too busy running their businesses to create social media accounts, produce strategic content and manage these accounts.
“Businesses that want to succeed must start thinking social,” said Erin Laytham Lentz, founder of Swell New Media, a boutique marketing firm that specializes in social media marketing. “Integrating social media into a website is critical in today’s market. It is one of the most effective ways to promote brand following and connect with customers; the use of contests, photos and video enhance these social interactions and opens the door to endless marketing opportunities.”
A Washington D.C. native, Erin earned her B.S. degree in mass communications and journalism from James Madison University. Her business experience includes two decades in the restaurant business, teaching and directing school, camps, and creative arts programs, business ownership and sales/marketing. She arrived in the Lowcountry two years ago, embarking on a new adventure with her five children: Grayson, Davis, Elliott, Addeline and Emmelia. Advertising sales with Pink magazine afforded her the opportunity to get to know her new surroundings and interact with an abundance of the area’s finest business owners.
“I was touched by the overwhelming passion and perseverance these individuals possessed,” she said. “After hearing them share their personal journeys to becoming entrepreneurs, I realized that marketing and advertising was a source of frustration for many, due to budget constraints and lack of time. Many had weathered hard economic times or uprooted to new locations to stay in business. I found myself preoccupied with networking and offering creative ideas as my shared enthusiasm for their endeavors grew. It was upon developing these client relationships that I discovered my own passion as a ‘brand enthusiast,’ and so Swell New Media was born.”
Erin works with small businesses, non-profit organizations, artists, musicians and chefs, taking a cross-platform approach to online marketing for maximum ROI, brand voice and reach/ interaction to grow a target audience. Traditional services such as PR, website design, and ad/logo design are readily available as well. Swell NM embraces a creatively inspired, out-of-the-box, evolving approach to online marketing trends.

Palmetto Medical Group
25 Sherington Drive, Suite D
Motivated by a strong desire to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives, Stephanie Lovato began her career as a board certified physician assistant in 2008. Since that time, she has had the opportunity to provide medical care to a wide array of individuals in various clinical settings, from acute care to primary/preventative care.
Stephanie started her career in a local urgent care/primary care practice under the guidance of an emergency medicine physician. She has recently joined Palmetto Medical Group, an internal and family care practice—a move that has allowed her to focus more completely on establishing long-term relationships with patients. In this setting, Stephanie has been able to expand her patient population to include her specific interests in geriatric care as well promoting proactive health maintenance in the younger adult and pediatric populations. Prior to graduate school, Stephanie was an accomplished triathlete and runner. With this experience and her ongoing enthusiasm for athletic endeavors, she brings a strong background of sports related medicine to Palmetto Medical Group.
While she truly loves her work, Stephanie also knows the value of maintaining balance in her life. “It is important to do work that you love, but I feel it is it as just as important for me to pursue outside interests and to cherish time with my life’s love (my 3 year-old daughter, Zoe). When major responsibilities are the job description, effective stress relief is a must. So what do you do to unwind when your days revolve around supporting three businesses? Tami Bream will tell you that taking daily walks with her three Chinese Shar Pei really helps. Her wrinkly kids, Cleopatra, Mofongo and Stella provide comic relief and hilarity with their antics.
Over the years Tami has successfully directed for-profit and not-for-profit enterprises. As an executive consultant, she’s helped turn companies around financially as well as built them from the ground up.
When she and her husband, Harry Morales, moved to Hilton Head full time in 2004, they saw an opportunity in electronic payments and launched their third startup, Equity Payment. This national credit card processing company provides a value proposition based on integrity and a customer centric focus in an industry short of both. As chief operating officer of Equity Payment, her days start early and generally are unpredictable. Tami is one of only eight in the state of South Carolina that has earned the distinction of Certified Payment Professional.
She also believes in community, volunteering as much time as she can to many worthy causes. One very special passion is the Hilton Head Island Wine and Food Festival. This Festival is a true labor of love; the appreciation of wine, food and this island. In her third year as chair, she believes that the festival is the perfect showcase for the Lowcountry, allowing visitors to enjoy the beauty and to experience its ever-growing list of award-winning chefs and restaurants.
Equity Payment recently acquired Trattoria Divina, an Italian restaurant with a delightfully fresh menu, located in Park Plaza. Tami is learning the intricacies of the restaurant and, in the meantime, is sharing her business expertise to help this restaurant continue its quest to be an island favorite.

A Splash of Elegance in a Sea of Options
1300 Fording Island Road, Route 278
Seaquins Ballroom’s owner, Sondra Ammeen, and events coordinator, Vickie Buckley have an inherent elegance that is reflected in each event they carry out. Bringing their diverse backgrounds together, former teacher, school principal, and dance champion, Ammeen made an immediate connection with Buckley when she was looking for an events coordinator for Seaquins. With a degree in fashion design, years of design experience, and a former business owner, herself, the two understood each other immediately.
Bonding over a love a red wine and golf, Ammeen and Buckley have developed a successful and trusting relationship, resulting in the most stunning and well-executed weddings, celebrations, events, and meetings imaginable. These women understand that every bride or event planner has a vision, but that it takes a special kind of expertise to corral that vision into a cohesive, beautiful outcome.
Flexible event space, chic décor, and practical conveniences make planning effortless and affordable. With Seaquins Ballroom as a stunning starting point, the attention to detail provided by Ammeen and Buckley, and flexible options, this venue allows for dreams to come true and budgets to be managed.
