An Evening with our Stars
BY:Rebecca Edwards

“Help them follow their art.” That is the objective of Governor’s School for the Arts Foundation, an organization established to support the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities in Greenville, SC. Like a well-performed piece of work, these words transformed into a compelling, emotional journey as SCGSAH President Dr. Bruce Halverson addressed Hilton Head Island residents during An Evening With Our Stars—a GSA Foundation event—and spoke about SCGSAH junior music student Nick Schrantz.

Schrantz, a gifted cello player with a bright future ahead of him, might not have ever realized his full potential musically if not for SCGSAH.

“After hearing about SCGSAH from a school representative speaking to his middle school class, Nick auditioned and was accepted to both of our Academy and Discovery summer programs,” says Halverson. “Now Nick is in his first year of our high school program. Thanks to the new experiences offered as an SCGSAH student, Nick expresses an interest in continuing his music studies in college and hopes to attend Harvard.”

As Schrantz tunes into his talent, so do the people that matter most to him.
“Nick had the opportunity to attend the Greenville Symphony Orchestra along with his mother, Brenda. It was the first time his mother had seen an orchestral concert,” said Halverson. As a result, Schrantz’s mother was more able to appreciate her son’s aspirations and better support him.

Halverson’s anecdote about Schrantz further enriched An Evening with Our Stars, a Lowcountry laden affair complete with southern hospitality and Spanish moss that raised over $80,000 for the GSA Foundation.

According to Halverson, GSA Foundation donors have made it possible for hundreds of students to participate in the school’s residential program, despite their family’s inability to pay the school’s fees. Approximately 30% of the students who attend the residential school and the summer programs apply for full or partial scholarships.
