Wisdom may come with age, but unfortunately, so do fine lines, wrinkles and sagging skin. As our faces begin to go south, an array of cosmetic procedures are available to perk things back up, including injections, fillers and surgical facelifts. But for those who would rather avoid needles and knives, now there is Myotonology®, a patented facial toning process that can dramatically reduce the signs of aging.

Available locally and offered exclusively at FACES DaySpa, Myotonology is a form of microcurrent therapy. It is completely non-invasive and can be used alone or combined with other cosmetic procedures to provide the most effective facial rejuvenation.

How Myotonology works

To understand the science of facial toning, think about what happens when you work out at the gym. Much in the same way we strengthen and tone muscles in the body, Myotonology stimulates facial muscles. Because results are cumulative (just like those gym workouts), a series of 15-24 treatments is recommended, depending on your age and certain lifestyle factors. Over time, muscle memory is created, after which a monthly maintenance treatment will do the trick.

“If you just want to look your best for a special event, a one-time Myotonology treatment can be effective and will last about 48 hours. But the best (and most economical) way is to do it in a series so that you create that muscle memory,” said Tanya Hagedorn, lead esthetician at FACES.

What sets Myotonology apart from other microcurrent treatments is the patented therapy that isolates 30 specific facial muscles, to tighten and relax them as needed.

According to Hagedorn, only licensed estheticians who have been specifically trained in the facial mapping technique can perform the service. “We can isolate the muscles right under your eye, the muscles on your forehead and between your eyes. We work them to fatigue, kind of like lifting heavy weights,” she explained.

In addition to muscle conditioning, Myotonology increases circulation to improve skin tone, reduce fine lines and wrinkles and increase hydration, resulting in a refreshed look. The treatment also stimulates and triggers release of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), necessary for collagen production and cellular regeneration. The result is a healthier, more productive, more youthful skin.

Forty-four-year-old Laura Dennis, a nurse and esthetician, completed a series of Myo treatments at FACES last winter and has kept up the monthly maintenance since. “The results are amazing,” she said, “and not just with the fine lines and wrinkles. I have seen an improvement in the texture of my skin, overall hydration and the dark circles under my eyes. I’m the perfect candidate for this,” she added, explaining her proactive approach to prevent further signs of aging.

Stressing the importance of starting sooner rather than later, Hagedorn pointed out that after age 40, cheeks drop by about a quarter inch and another half inch after 50.

“If you start in your 30s, you can prevent it,” she said. “But obviously if you wait until your 60s, we have to correct. It’s easier to prevent than correct.”

Unlike surgical procedures, Myotonology produces gradual results and doesn’t change the look and shape of your face. “It pulls the skin back to the frame of your face. You look like the same person but rejuvenated,” Hagedorn said.

For those who have chosen a surgical approach, Myotonology is the ideal follow up, pointed out FACES general manager Alexis Sargo. “When people have had facelifts, it is a way to protect that investment.” Myotonology is also the perfect complement to Botox treatments as it can help prevent muscle atrophy associated with long-term use of the popular injections, Hagedorn added.

Other anti-aging strategies and home care

In addition to Myotonology, FACES offers an arsenal of anti-aging procedures, including microdermabrasion, chemical peels, LED treatments and a variety of customized facials. All are meant to complement each other, and estheticians can recommend a combination of treatments that will work well together along with products for homecare.

“Taking care of yourself at home will make your professional treatments more effective,” Hagedorn said, stressing the importance of eye cream and sunscreen for everyone. FACES offers its own signature line of skincare products and makeup as well as international best sellers, Murad, Eminence Organics, Philosophy and Strivectin as well as Clarisonic and Tanda. Your esthetician can recommend a home care routine for your skin type and specific concerns that fits your beauty budget.

Take home care a step further with your own NuFace® microcurrent device. “It’s less powerful than the professional equipment, but it stimulates the muscle and can improve your Myo series if you do it at home in between,” Hagedorn said. FACES offers the latest model, the NuFace Trinity, an FDA-approved device with
interchangeable treatment heads, including LED attachments. “It’s like two machines in one—two approaches to fine lines and wrinkles,” Hagedorn said.

Look younger now

Regular spa treatments and consistent home care are the tickets to great looking skin every day. But sometimes we need a quick fix. The following products and services offer instant results for a more youthful look:

Lash extensions and conditioner: Longer and thicker lashes can make you look five to ten years younger. Eyelash extensions have the effect of brightening up your eyes and at the same time downplaying dark circles, fine lines, and puffiness. Grow your natural lashes longer and thicker with Revitalash®.

Brow tint: When brows are thin and light, they make your features disappear, adding years to your face. Brow tinting brings back the look of natural thick eyebrows rather than an obvious penciled brow. Strengthen and condition natural brows with Revitabrow®.

Lip pencil: Used correctly, a neutral lip pencil adds volume to thinning lips and boosts the staying power of your lipstick.

Cheek color: As we age, our faces lose fullness. Blush not only defines cheeks, but also helps deflect from dark under-eye circles and brightens your entire face.

Trained beauty consultants are on hand at FACES to help you master the subtleties of your skin type, features and coloring. Enjoy a private makeup lesson for $75, fully redeemable for products.
