While Hilton Head Island is known primarily as a beach, golf, and tennis resort, a myriad of activities await both locals and tourists, no matter what the season. Nature lovers, sports enthusiasts, families, and arts patrons can find plenty of things to keep them busy from sun-up to sundown.
With stretches of sandy beaches, miles of biking and hiking trails, and meandering waterways, the island is the perfect place to experience the outdoors. Nature lovers can kayak through the marshes and Intercoastal Waterway, take a professionally led birding tour, or relax on a dolphin cruise. Those who prefer a more “hands-on” encounter with nature can experience crabbing, deep sea fishing, or attend one of the many workshops presented by the Coastal Discovery Museum or other organizations. Beachcombing on nearby islands or exploring one of the local nature preserves can provide an up-close encounter with the native flora and fauna.
The island can be explored by land, sea, or air. Rent a bike and enjoy the miles of bike paths and breathtaking Lowcountry beauty while getting some exercise. Local boat captains know the local waters and provide cruises that are both entertaining and often informative. When booking local boat charters, passengers can choose between the camaraderie offered on a larger boat or a more intimate cruise limited to only six passengers. Powerboats, sailboats, and pontoon boats are also available for rental.
Hilton Head is truly an aquatic playground. The more adventurous may want to rent wave runners or water-skis or try wakeboarding or parasailing. Sporty types may want to treat themselves to a golf or tennis lesson. The island is home to some of the best pros in the United States.
Kids are easy to entertain on Hilton Head Island. There are numerous day camps and cruises designed to engage and fascinate children of all ages. The petting zoo and horseback riding available at Lawton Stables can be enjoyed by the entire family as can the excitement of Waterfun Park and the imaginative miniature golf courses that dot the island. Hilton Head has recently welcomed the Sandbox Children’s Museum, an interactive children’s museum that provides a great antidote to the rainy day blues.
The arts take center stage on Hilton Head. The Arts Center of Coastal Carolina produces everything from Broadway blockbusters to avant garde plays. Nationally renowned performers showcase their talents at both the Arts Center and other venues. Local theater groups, the Hilton Head Orchestra, and musical ensembles are among the dozens of arts groups that perform throughout the year. Hilton Head is also home to a large number and variety of art galleries.
No matter what the season, there’s never a reason to be idle on Hilton Head. With hundreds of activities geared toward every age and dozens of interests, “I’m bored” are two words you’ll never hear.
